Summary

In the school library, Genesis, Sophia, and Troy discuss the upcoming talent show. Genesis learns that last year’s winner gained celebrity status and that Troy will perform a violin piece. She borrows a new biography about Ella Fitzgerald. That night, trying to forget her dad’s prolonged absence, Genesis puts on a pretend concert in her room. Suddenly, her dad erupts in her doorway, drunk and insulting. Though he shows her a rent receipt, Genesis’s mom is furious that he has again broken his promise to stop drinking. She orders Genesis to pack her bag at once. Before she does, Genesis again scrubs her skin raw.

Heading to Grandma’s house, Genesis’s mom breaks down. She regains control only to hear Grandma preach as usual. After a few days away, Genesis’s mom returns but cannot stand any more preaching...
