Summary
Genesis’s dad comes home while she and her mom are still working on her hair. Despite his promise, he has been out drinking with friends again, supposedly celebrating his promotion. Genesis would like to hide from her parents’ quarrel, but finds herself caught in the middle when her dad unkindly comments about her hair. Genesis is so upset by his words that even after her mom stands up for her, she goes to her room and completely undoes her hair, once again wishing that she had inherited her mother’s good looks.
The next day, Genesis’s mom shares a secret with her: she wants to go back to school and get a better job. Genesis laments that she might have to move again but tries to show her support. When she changes the subject to Billie Holiday, she learns that the...
