Summary
On her first day at Farmington Oaks Middle School, Genesis tries to navigate the maze of crowded hallways and notices that except for a few students, most are white. She meets her home room and language arts teacher who is strict and unfriendly. In math, the teacher gives her a long assessment test but does not single her out. In PE, Genesis is relieved that no one notices her lack of uniform. After a boy named Troy helps her find her way to chorus class, she meets her one and only black teacher of the day, Mrs. Hill, who also seems the kindest.
Back home after her first day at school, Genesis is not as unhappy as she usual is. In math class the next day, her teacher returns her test but instead of scolding her poor grade, he assigns Troy to tutor...
