Summary
Kobabe explains that Phoebe has always been supportive and recalls her describing em as a “genderless person,” remarking, “She knew before I did” (85). During eir junior year of high school, Kobabe got involved with the school theater club and learned about Oscar Wilde. Shortly thereafter, a male friend called Kobabe and asked em out on a date. E tentatively agreed, but when the friend called em his girlfriend, e canceled. E did not want to be anyone's girlfriend.
