Anonymity and Technology
Through the romance of Elle and Darien, the novel argues that advances in technology which allow for anonymity have increased the potential for communication between people. Elle and Darien are two people from very different worlds, but they come together because of a chance phone call. Darien is a mega-famous teen heartthrob who has an army of admiring fans who follow him everywhere he goes. Elle is an orphan who works in a food truck and has no money or family.
Fate brings the two together through their phones, which suggests a certain magic about the technology of modern communication. When looking for a number to call to get himself out of the appearance at the convention, Darien finds the cell phone number for the founder of the convention, who just so happens to be Elle’s father.
