Point of View
The point of view of the novel switches between Darien and Elle in alternating chapters. Elle starts and ends the novel, which indicates a slight hierarchy between the two characters. Both narrators speak in the first-person present-tense. There is an immediacy to everything that happens to them. While both characters look back on the past and recount specific incidents that happened to them, these memories only ever occur in brief flashes. There are never any fully-developed flashbacks or scenes in the past. Instead, we are immersed in the present moment of these character’s lives. Because the point of view switches back and forth between Darien and Elle, the romantic leads of the novel, there is ample opportunity for their lives to intersect without their knowledge.
