Needles
Needles represent Ian's mother's addiction. When Ian finds them around the house, they fill him with an immediate sense of dread, knowing that there is physical evidence of his mother's using drugs again. Notably, Aunt Terry, who often helps feed into Brandi's addiction, is often the one to hide the needles or get rid of them, showing how she is unwilling to confront the reality of the addiction, or her own part in growing it.
Danny's Ranger
Though he had said he would take Ian to his father in a a larger Silverado, Danny shows up to take Ian to Memphis in a smaller Ranger, which has less room for Gather. This is a clear symbol of Danny's failures and broken promises, and his lack of care toward Gather, as he is later revealed to have neglected to even tell Ian's father, Dwight, about the dog...
