Part 2: Chapters 14-15 Summary
Corinne. Malcolm immediately takes over the care of the new baby, hiring a nurse and instructing her that Olivia is to have no say over the baby's care. Malcolm also hires a special nanny when Corinne is only three, in order to teach Corinne the proper manners of a young woman. Corinne is given special attention, allowed to eat at the dinner table as a toddler instead of waiting until she is six, like Mal and Joel. It is clear to everyone that Corinne is the apple of her father's eye, including Mal and Joel who find themselves continuously criticized by their cold, distant father. This situation causes a great deal of tension between Olivia and Malcolm, but it does nothing to lessen the deep adoration they both feel for their daughter.
