Part 1: Chapters 3-4 Summary
The Ugly Duckling and the Swan. Olivia wakes the morning after her arrival at Foxworth Hall to find Malcolm already gone to the office. Olivia begins taking over the reins of Forworth Hall by exploring its rooms on her own. Olivia is shocked when she walks into the Swan Room, the room Malcolm told her the night before once belonged to his mother. This room contains an enormous Swan bed and luxurious furnishings that appear contrary to the conservative feel of the rest of the house. Olivia sits on the bed and tries to imagine what Malcolm's mother was like. When Malcolm catches her in this room, Olivia attempts to ask him about his mother.
