Summary

May 3: Gabi writes that Cindy told her that German had raped her. Cindy said that at first, she had gone along with German’s advances but then decided she wanted to stop. German told her that once she said yes, she could not change her mind. Gabi thought about the comment always connected with boys’ actions: “Boys will be boys” (229) and thought that it meant girls always had to be on the offensive.

May 5: Gabi writes how she is frustrated with the way people who have no idea about Mexican culture try to celebrate Cinco de Mayo with fake mustaches and sombreros.

To make her end of school pressures worse, Gabi’s mother is pressuring her to stay at home instead of going away to college. She tries to make Gabi feel bad by telling her she is acting like a white girl...
