Throughout the novel, the author uses her main character Camila's desire for freedom and independence to explore the ways in which cultural and familial expectations might entrap the individual. At the start of Furia, Camila feels limited by the way her family and culture see her. As a teenager living in Rosario, Argentina, all Camila wants is to play soccer. However, neither her parents nor her community believe this dream is appropriate for a woman. In Chapter 1, Camila rushes to her secret championship game, trying to hide the truth from her mother.
