Yamile Saied Méndez's young adult novel, Furia, is written from main character Camila Hassan's first person point of view, and in the past tense. The novel is set in the town of Rosario, located in Argentina. The novel is divided into 33 chapters and an epilogue and follows a largely linear plot structure.
Camila Hassan was 17 years old and living with her mother Isabel, father Andrés, and older brother Pablo when she was recruited to an all-girls soccer team. Ever since she was little, Camila loved playing soccer. However, she knew that her parents disapproved of the pastime. Once when her father caught her playing with the neighborhood boys, he humiliated her in front of everyone. Isabel sided with him, leaving Camila with no one to talk to about her favorite activity.
On the day of her team's championship game, Camila lied to her mother about where she was going. She longed to confide in Isabel, but feared the repercussions. Her father's constant anger and violence have made her mother distant and edgy. Camila knew there was no way she could speak openly.
After scoring the winning goal, Camila celebrated with her teammates. Her mood changed when she discovered that her childhood friend and old fling, Diego, was coming out of the neighboring stadium. Diego was a rising soccer star himself. On the night before he moved from Rosario to Turín, Italy to join his new team, he and Camila kissed. Camila thought the kiss meant something about their future together, but Diego never contacted her.
Later that night, Diego showed up at the house unannounced. He and Camila talked. Camila realized that they still had feelings for each other. He told her about a teaching opportunity she might like, and promised to take her there the next day.
The next day, Camila was thrilled to be spending time with Diego alone. They drove to the church of El Buen Pastor, where a priest Father Hugo had set up workshops for underprivileged children. It was through this program Camila would teach English. After her meeting with Father Hugo, she and Diego went to the park. Diego talked about his new, glamorous life. Though Camila envied him, she did not want to abandon her dreams just to be with him. She wanted to create her own version of Diego's life.
When Camila's best friend Roxana discovered Camila's relationship with Diego, she warned Camila. She thought Diego would distract her from her dreams. Camila did not want to listen to Roxana, but knew she was right. She called Diego and ended the relationship.
One day during practice, Camila looked up to see Diego on the sidelines. She fell and hurt her leg. Afterwards, Diego gave her a ride. They discussed their relationship. Camila thought Diego understood and supported her dreams. Before he left for Turín, he gave her presents and asked her to sustain a long distance relationship with him. Camila agreed.
In the weeks following, Camila tried focusing on the upcoming tournament while attempting to heal her leg. Meanwhile, she kept in contact with Diego. Then one day she told Isabel the truth about soccer. To her surprise and excitement, Isabel promised to support her. Everything seemed possible until Camila and Pablo got into a fight one night. Furious at their outburst, Andrés rushed out of his room and became verbally and physically violent with his family. The neighbors called the police, and they arrested Andrés.
The next day, Diego showed up at the house. Pablo told him what happened and he took the first flight from Turín to Rosario. He insisted that Camila move with him to Italy so that he could protect her. Camila refused.
After graduating from school and competing in the tournament, Camila pursued opportunities on professional teams. Finally, with the help of her mother and coach, she made plans to travel overseas for tryouts. Seven months later, she was playing on a professional team. Diego contacted her and apologized for what had happened. Disinterested in holding onto bitterness, Camila called him back.
