Summary
Chapter Thirty-One begins with the five men entering a small room with no furniture besides a simple table and a three-legged stool. The room has a single window that is barred from the inside with several pieces of wood. The three elders then arrange themselves against one wall and the two visitors follow suit. On the three-legged stool, there is a man about 40 years old who is dressed in monk like clothes. He has a rough beard and his uncombed hair falls to his shoulders. The man looks over his visitors and when he spies Jeremy he tells the others that he cannot be here and that he will tell others. Zephraim's kin promise that Jeremy will not tell anyone but Zephraim is still unsure that he can help and he does not want Jeremy to see him change. But in the middle...
