Summary
Shannon’s father, Harlan Cotterie, was one of the wealthiest farmers in the state. Unlike Wilfred, who always struggled to make ends meet, Harlan had extra money for luxuries such as indoor plumbing. One day, when Shannon was showering, her mother walked by and saw that she was pregnant. Henry went to Shannon’s house to check on her when she was not in school the next day, and her mother sent him away. He told Wilfred that he feared Shannon was pregnant and that Harlan would prevent them from marrying. Wilfred said that he was not going to let Henry get married, anyway, since he had no money. Henry was furious and said he wished Arlette was still alive because she would have had money.
