The entirety of the main narrative takes place at Geoffrey Betton’s residence. The story does not describe Betton’s home in detail, but it is clear that the residence is relatively large and expensive. Betton even employs a valet, Strett, who works in the home. Betton used to live in a cramped, crowded, low-rent apartment. However, the success of his first novel produced a substantial increase in wealth for him. In part, Betton’s new home represents the significant ways in which his life has changed. It also represents the ease and safety that wealth often affords to people with substantial financial means. In the main storyline, all of Betton and Vyse’s interactions take place in the home, beginning with Vyse’s interview for the secretary position.
