Summary
In Chapter 2, a few days after the publication of Betton’s second novel (which is entitled ‘Abundance’) Betton receives a large number of letters from readers. Vyse writes a few responses and shows them to Betton to make sure that he is striking the correct tone. Betton responds that Vyse’s writing is so beautiful that it will seem to invite prolonged correspondence with fans. As such, Betton asks Vyse to be a little more terse in his replies. For the next week, Vyse filters out all fan letters from Betton’s mail and writes responses to them. At first, Betton is quite pleased with not having to reader fan letters. However, to his surprise and internal embarrassment, he soon realizes that he wants to read the fan mail. Privately, he begins reading all of the fan letters that have arrived, and he finds...
