Unrequited Love
One of the main themes of this book is love. Lissa and Rose's relationship is filled with so much love that Lissa saved Rose's life after a car accident that stole the lives of Lissa's parents and brothers. Lissa also has a strong relationship with Christian, a relationship that is so close that Lissa's emotions with Christian pull Rose into her mind during intimate moments. However, the strongest relationships in this novel have to do with unrequited love.
Rose is in love with Dimitri. Dimitri is one of Rose's instructors. He is seven years her senior, which creates a situation in which a relationship is not a good idea. To add to the odds against this relationship, Rose and Dimitri are to be Lissa's guardians when Rose graduates from St. Vladimir's Academy.
