Summary
The first section of Frontier Follies, titled “Marriage,” describes Ree’s relationship with her husband, Ladd. In “Our Worst First Year,” Ree jokes that her strong marriage with Ladd ironically had a difficult start. During their honeymoon to Australia, Ree developed an inner ear condition that left her sick for much of the trip. Ladd also experienced business troubles, distracting him. Once they were back in Oklahoma and had moved onto Ladd’s ranch, Ree struggled to adapt to her new country lifestyle: she had not grown up in the countryside, but Ladd was a lifelong rancher, making her feel out of place. To make the situation even more difficult, she discovered she was pregnant only five weeks into their marriage.
