Summary
It has now been a year since Saro's death, and Tembi and Zoela are still grieving. Tembi describes it as "guerrilla grieving—stealthily mourning out of public view, using any tactics necessary to get by" (Loc 2357). She had thought that things would get easier at the end of the first year, but they had not. To mark the first anniversary of Saro's death, Tembi has a big gathering of friends and family at her house. She picks fava beans from the garden Saro planted and calls Nonna to find out how best to cook them. With this gathering, she hopes to bring back "some of the spirit of Saro's conviviality" (Loc 2424). On the phone, Nonna asks Tembi if she and Zoella will return to Sicily that summer, and Tembi answers "Yes," before she even has time to think...
