Summary

Chapter 24 begins with the Americans capturing Rome and, two days later, storming the beaches of Normandy. Angelo, determined to find Eva, got to know an American Army Major over the next two months, and finally revealed that he needed to get to Germany in whatever way possible. The Major allowed him to field enlist in the Army with an armored division in France, which would then proceed to Germany, but warned him that he would be expected to complete his tour of duty even if he found Eva. Mario, himself a doctor, demanded to come with Angelo despite his protests. The chapter ends with Angelo writing in the diary four months after leaving Rome and growing frustrated that the unit has been sent to Luxembourg instead of Germany.
