Summary
Chapter 26 begins in February, roughly two months after the end of the previous chapter. Angelo told Eva that Aldo had a new batch of documents for her, and that they were to meet at a trattoria near her work. Eva was late, however, and did not see Aldo until curfew at six o’clock. As he approached her, a German called out to them, and Aldo told her to keep walking as he distracted the German, who turned out to be Captain von Essen. Eva turned a corner just in time to see von Essen shoot Aldo in the back of the neck. The patrol left, and Eva returned to fetch the package of documents before departing for the Church of the Sacred Heart. Shaken, she went to the bedroom in the basement, where Angelo saw the Aldo’s blood on her dress...
