Summary
At the beginning of Chapter 8, Eva and Angelo bade goodbye to Fabia and Santino and boarded the train. Along the way to Rome, the train stopped and several German soldiers boarded. They scrutinized Angelo’s documents and accused him of being an Italian deserter, but he showed his prosthetic leg and they left. Eva and Angelo had a bit of strained conversation before falling into silence, and Angelo reminisced about his first kiss with Eva in Maremma when she was twelve and he was fourteen. Fabia caught them, however, and the two were not left alone together for the rest of the summer.
Chapter 9 begins as Eva and Angelo departed the train station. Eva intended to live with her uncle Augusto, but Angelo refused, stating that they lived in a Jewish neighborhood and that it was too dangerous. Once on the bus, they...
