Summary
Part Six is titled Remember Me Always. Chapter 35 is titled “America Breaks Its Promise to Lily Chin.” Lily struggled. She remembered how Vincent loved the melons she grew in her garden and no longer found joy in gardening. She withdrew, including from Vikki. Everything reminded her of Vincent. She moved to Chinatown in San Francisco. People continued to be angry about Vincent's death. Lily realized that there was more than just Ebens's acquittal haunting her – “It was America” (286). She returned to Guangzhou, China, reuniting with her mother and extended family. She communicated by letter with Zia and others. Zia, Chan, and others visited, and found her in better spirits. After a cancer diagnosis in 2001, Lily returned to Michigan for medical care. Her sister took care of her and she died in 2002. At her funeral, Zia delivered...
