Summary

Part Four is titled United States vs. Ronald Ebens and Michael Nitz. Chapter 19 is titled “The Defenders: Miriam Siefer and Frank Eaman.” Defense attorney Miriam Siefer was appointed to defend Nitz and Frank Eaman was appointed to defend Ebens. They each felt they were doing their duty, and that there were no grounds for a civil rights case. Both had backgrounds as activists, both were sympathetic for the situation, and both felt the media attention was going to make it difficult to find an impartial juror. Siefer felt the media had a lot of facts wrong, which was common in her experience. For one thing, she noted that many articles were “about two unemployed autoworkers” (160). She said that was an “urban myth” because “Nitz worked at a furniture store” (160).
