Morven's Scream
Morven’s scream symbolizes the call for Anya’s help, and the tie between the two sisters. This is also how Nix gives an aural signal of the start of the novel and the end of it, as well as Morven’s own transformation over time. The opening sentence of Chapter 1 is, “The scream was very loud and went on for a very long time” (5). Nix explains how Anya has to listen to Morven’s scream to discern when she is truly troubled or not, as Morven screams frequently. This is what starts Anya finding her sister, hearing her troubles about her newest love Prince Denholm, then leaving to start her Quest. At the end of Chapter 34, Nix signals the end is near by finishing the chapter with, “Adding dire punctuation to his call, Morven screamed. The loudest, most terrible scream Anya had ever heard...
