Idgie Threadgoode
Idgie Threadgoode is the novel’s main character even though all of her scenes take place in flashback. From the time she was born, Idgie knew that she was different, but that didn’t stop her from living the life she chose. She began dressing as a boy at an early age, chopped off her hair, and fell in love with Ruth Jamison. Before she met Ruth, she was best friends with her brother Buddy until he was tragically killed in a train accident that deeply affected Idgie. Idgie became reckless and wild, living in isolation from her family. Ruth and Idgie taught each other how to love, and they went on to lead a very happy life together raising their son,Stump.
