The Python
The python symbolizes both Ala, the ultimate mother goddess, and Ada's eventual resurrection in the novel. The We explain that the python is "the source of the stream, the flesh of form of the god" (9), going on to explain that Ada herself is a python, for she is the flesh form of a goddess, the daughter of Ala. In effect, the python symbolizes Ala, as well as Ada's connection to Ada. It is this connection which causes Ada to pray to Ala, which in turn causes Ada to accept herself at the novel's end. Ala urges Ada to "find [her] tail" (224), in effect, urging Ada to form a circle out of herself, where "everything is shedding and everything is resurrection" (224). Thus, the python comes to symbolize Ala, Ada, and the constant resurrection and immortality of the divine.
