Violette Trenet Toussaint

Violette is the main narrator of the novel. Her mother left her at birth which had a life-long effect on Violette's desire to be loved and her fear of being abandoned. Violette gives birth to Leonine when she is very young and marries Philippe a few years later. She has a poor relationship with Philippe's parents. Her relationship with Philippe is based solely on sex. Once that is no longer the most important thing to Violette, they have nothing in common to hold them together.

Violette makes a couple of friends while she and Philippe are still living together. She cherishes her friendship with Celia and Sasha even more than usual because they are her first real connections and her first real friends. She later becomes close to the seven men who have business at the cemetery, especially Nono, Father Cedric, Gaston, and Elvis.
