Summary
The novel includes several subplots that do not directly affect Violette. Chapter 78 focuses entirely on one of those. Countess de Darrieux is at Violette's cottage after a funeral. She talks some about her life, shares opinions with Father Cedric, and asks Nono to walk her out when she leaves. There is a budding romance between Nono and the countess. These two characters are getting married as the novel comes to an end.
Chapter 80 is somewhat strange compared to the rest of the novel. Typically, an entire chapter is from one perspective, though there are a few exceptions. For example, a chapter might include an excerpt from Irene's journal and then changes to Violette's thoughts about Irene. Chapter 80 opens from Philippe's perspective when he sees the little girl that makes him think of Leonine. The chapter then has a sub-head dated two months later...
