Summary
Chapter 11 picks up when Julien is visiting Violette. Violette's home is always open to those who pass through the cemetery gates during the day, but she is accustomed to being alone in the evenings. Violette explains that the large collection of liquor is from grateful people who thank her by giving her gifts. Violette invites Julien to talk about his mother, but he has little to say. Violette allows him to borrow one of her journals, directing him to a speech she thinks might help. He promises to return it before he returns to Marseilles the next morning.
Chapter 12 opens with the speech about Marie Geant, written by her granddaughter. It is filled with memories of their relationship.
In Chapter 13, Violette finds the journal and a thank-you note from Julien the next morning. There are currently 11 cats and a couple of dogs living...
