Della
Throughout their friendship, Della serves as a mother figure to Cathy. They first met while Della attends the College of Nursing in her fifties. She decides to attend the college simply because her children, Robbie and Bennett, were already grown and “she had nothing to do” (6). Della has trouble making strong decisions on her own regarding her future. During their first big fight, Cathy remarks that Della will “give in as usual” to her husband Dick’s whims instead of asserting herself and achieving her dreams (16). When Dick decides to buy a resort property in the Florida Everglades, Della gives up her job as a nurse to follow his whim, even though he did not consult her first. Dick’s investment in the resort fails and, shortly after he dies, so Della is forced to return home. As she packs her boxes, she comes across the book Two...
