Chapter 23: The Empty Book

Kevin is in the ICU with no visitors allowed other than his mother. Max decides to walk over there anyway just on the chance he will get to see Freak. He runs into Gwen who is all teary-eyed. She hugs him and tells him that Freak is insisting on seeing him. Dr. Spivak tells Max he can only stay a short while and not to touch anything. Max is surprised at how tiny Freak looks on the big hospital bed with tubes seemingly everywhere. Freak shows Max the tracheotomy procedure he has to have in order to breathe. He thinks it is cool and sticks his finger on the tracheotomy button whistling the theme for Star Trek through the opening in his throat.

Max asks when Freak can come home. Kevin says he will not be coming...
