Chapter 15: What Came Down the Chimney

Freak and Fair Gwen come to Max's house for Christmas Eve dinner. Everyone stuffs themselves—Gwen watches Freak so he does not eat too fast. Grim tells some funny stories about when he was a kid. He claims that his family was so poor that he did not get a lump of coal in his stocking—his father would have to write the word "coal" on a piece of paper and put it in his stocking because they could not afford the real thing. After dinner there are lots of presents. Max gives Freak a gizmo that has all kinds of tools on it. He figures that Freak will be able to invent something with it.
