Summary
Chapter 9 comprises a short phone call between Ry and Polly D, the journalist investigating Professor Stein’s activities and his past. Polly tells Ry she cannot trace Professor Stein beyond a company in Geneva. She cannot find out anything about his childhood or his past. Polly D wants to know why Professor Stein’s past is being kept secret. Ry tells Polly D they do not care, but still the call creates a sense of unease.
Chapter 10, also only one page, jumps back to Mary Shelley who awakes from sleep because the story of Frankenstein haunts her. Percy Shelley tries to comfort her by telling her “It is but a story,” (147). Mary Shelley, however, says that the story has become her reality. She wonders if she saw Victor Frankenstein in the market that morning.
