Summary
The story is narrated by a fox named Fox 8, who is also writing the words of the story. Many of the words are misspelled, and the fox begins by apologizing to the reader about the misspellings. Fox 8 writes about how he first learned humans’ language. One night, Fox 8 was walking by a human house, and a window was open. He heard the sound of talking, and he liked the sounds of the human words. He came back to listen for many nights, and he eventually began to understand the words. The words were those of a woman telling stories to her children. One day, when Fox 8 was with his friend Fox 7, from the same group of foxes, Fox 8 demonstrated his newfound ability to speak human. Fox 7 was impressed and suggested that Fox 8 should demonstrate this ability to their group leader.
