Shadows

Shadows represent secrets. Xaden is often depicted in tandem with shadows, and his power is shadow-wielding, meaning he is able to control and manipulate shadows. He is also keeping the deep secret of the true history of Navarre. Throughout the novel, Xaden protects the secrets of the rebellion and hides his collaboration with the people of Poromiel.

Dragons

Dragons represent collaboration. The relationship between the dragons and humans are a representation of collaborating for a mutually beneficial cause. The dragons choose to work with humans in a military capacity to protect the borders of their breeding grounds. The Navarrians they allow to ride them want to protect the borders of their countries.
