Summary
In Chapter 32, Violet goes to find Xaden to talk late at night, and discovers him alone on the parapet. She is distraught that he is risking his life to climb out there for no clear reason. He is dealing with depression and decides to tell Violet about his traumatic past. He tells her that after the rebels lost in the rebellion, he was old enough to remember. He said the Navarrian government wanted to execute not only the adults who carried out the rebellion, but their children too. This completely changes Violet's perspective on Xaden, and she realizes she has truly fallen in love with him. After nagging him for risking his life walking on the parapet, the two return to the college together, and spend the night together.
