Zhifu, China
Zhifu is a seaside town in China, and is the protagonist's natal home. When Daiyu is a child, her parents operate a famous tapestry business in Zhifu. Her grandmother later sends her back to this town to fend for herself. During this time, Daiyu wanders the streets hungry and begging shop owners to give her a job. She finally finds employment with Master Wang, whose calligraphy school is located on the outskirts of town.
After being kidnapped at Zhifu's fish market, Daiyu is sold into slavery in America. Wherever she finds herself, she longs for home and the comfort of the seaside environment she was raised in. Her memories bring scenes from Zhifu to life throughout the narrative.
