Of those who protect people like me.
-- Daiyu
(Part 1, Chapter 1)
Importance: When Daiyu encounters Jasper at the fish market in Zhifu, she believes he is a god-like figure who has been sent to save her from the wrath of the fish vendors. Her inability to see his nefarious intent demonstrates the innocence of protagonist and indicates her need to learn through experience. Later when she reflects on this encounter, she curses herself for being a child and not being able to see the obvious.
The theme of trust and betrayal is introduced in the first pages, and is later developed when Daiyu makes a similar mistake of trusting Samuel. She does not see that his innocence prevents him from embodying a strong masculinity capable of protecting her. These two experiences lead her to close off to the world and never again reveal her true identity to anyone.
And I would never let myself die...
