Summary

Part 3, Chapter 1 is the story of the mythical Lin Daiyu. She died coughing up blood while mourning her beloved, and she was “not afraid” as she faced death.

In Part 3, Chapter 2, Daiyu is working at the Pierce Big Store in Pierce, Idaho. She reflects on the kindness of Lum and Nam, the two storeowners who took her in and gave her a job. “My life had been split in two: before the kidnapping and after. Now there is a third split, a new possibility: the return” (150).

In Part 3, Chapter 3, “I changed when I left Samuel in Boise that night” (151). She knows that she “escaped the brothel, but [she] would never escape the bad men” (151).
