Summary

In Part 2, Chapter 1, a man chooses a girl named Swallow at the brothel. Every girl is chosen except Daiyu, Jade, and Pearl. Jade says that she “will be kicked out if [she] does not get a customer soon” (65). “Madame Lee asks [Daiyu] to join her in her office” and names her Peony (65). Madame Lee says that “tomorrow, you will take your first customers” (67).

In Part 2, Chapter 2, Daiyu remembered her trip to San Francisco packed inside the coal bucket. She was hungry and covered in her own excrement. She “thought about Lin Daiyu, willing her to come” and “take me out of here” (75). She was purchased by Madame Lee in a crowded street market who takes her to her laundromat, which was a front for the brothel business.
