Chapters 9 and 10 Summary
Trantor is a huge conglomerate of metal buildings with some forty billion inhabitants. There are no life forms except "man, his pets and his parasites." The sole purpose of the planet is to serve as government and administrators of the galaxy. When Barr and Devers attempt to land, they're subjected to probes, photographs and questionnaires. When Devers is unable to produce the appropriate documentation, he's told he'll be retained. He bribes the guards with some of the money Brodrig had bribed him with, and is granted entry. They are then faced with the daunting challenge of trying to bribe their way into an audience with Cleon II. As Barr is trying to bribe yet another official, Devers watches almost with disinterest, having seen it a number of times already. Then the "official," who turns out to be a soldier, tells them...
