Summary

Chapter 1 begins with the main character being driven by her father (Dan) to the house of a family called the Kinsellas. As they drive, she fantasizes about the new life that awaits her there. Upon their arrival, the mother and father of the Kinsella family meet them, and the mother greets the main character. They enter the house, and the main character tells Mrs. Kinsella of how her mother won money on the prize bonds (a sort of lottery in Ireland) and is at home, taking care of her siblings with another one on the way. The two Kinsellas, the main character, and her father then sit down to eat. Dan tells lies about how the hay at the family farm is growing, which the main character notes is a pattern for him.
