Summary
In Chapter 20, Curzon woke early and went to relieve Eben at the fire. After arriving at the place where the fire was supposed to be burning, Curzon discoverd that Eben was not there. Then, Eben appeared. He seemed shaken. When Curzon got the fire going, he noticed Eben’s eye was swollen and his mouth bloody. Eben asked if Curzon knew how to cook a pumpkin.
In Chapter 21, Eben explained he had gone stealing with Burns and that Burns had gotten into a fight with him. Eben had thought Burns would share the food he stole with the troops. Instead, Burns wanted money for it. So, Eben had stolen one of the pumpkins when Burns was not looking. Eben was ashamed because his Aunt Patience would be unhappy with him for stealing.
