Summary
In the Prelude, Curzon woke in a rowboat and realized that Isabel had freed him from Bridewell Prison. She wanted to go to Charleston and look for her sister, Ruth. Because they were slaves, Curzon knew they needed to stay hidden to be safe.
In Chapter 1, nine months later Isabel had run away from him and Curzon was looking for the road back to Albany. He was running from Trumbull, his boss, who not only stole from the army but also did not pay Curzon what he owed him. Because he never got paid, Curzon stole spoons and pewter buckles from Trumbull before he ran away from him. Curzon hid behind a log when he heard gunfire and saw soldiers around him.
