Nicole
Nicole is the 39-year-old narrator of half of the novel and one of its two main protagonists. When the novel begins, Nicole is living in Brooklyn with her husband and two young sons. She is an internationally celebrated author particularly popular in Israel, as she writes frequently on Jewish themes. While awash in existential angst about her failing marriage and lack of writing inspiration, Nicole decides to travel to Tel Aviv where she vacationed as a child. There she meets a family friend, Eliezer Friedman, who involves her in a mission to acquire the final unpublished work of Franz Kafka from the daughter of Kafka's friend's mistress, to whom the documents were legally bequeathed. Friedman would like Nicole to write an ending for one of Kafka's final plays.
Nicole's true mission, however, turns out to be one of self-discovery. She is fascinated by the ideas of the multiverse...
