Canada
By the time Fife dies, he has lived most of his life in Canada. Fife fled from the United States to Canada in the late 1960s, when he was in his late twenties. While living in Canada, Fife gained notoriety as a documentary filmmaker. The frame narrative takes place at Fife’s residence in Montreal, where Malcolm is interviewing him.
Virginia
In the early 1960s, when Fife was in his early twenties, he moved from Boston to Virginia. He moved their specifically because he married Alicia, a woman who was originally from Virginia. In Virginia, Fife attended college and graduate school. He resisted the idea of taking over the lucrative business run by Alicia’s father, as Fife found business boring, and he aspired to be a writer.
