Summary
Chapter 1 opens on April 1, 2018. Leonard “Leo” Fife is a man in his late seventies. He has been diagnosed with terminal cancer and will likely die in the near future. His live-in nurse is Renée Jacques, a middle-aged Haitian woman. Fife lives in Montréal Canada with his wife, Emma Flynn. Over the past decades, Fife has gained notoriety in Canada as a documentary filmmaker, primarily exposing corruption and malfeasance in corporations and government. Fife is originally from the United States. Malcolm MacLeod—a middle-aged filmmaker and former student of Fife’s—has come to Fife’s home with a film crew. At Fife’s request, Malcolm is going to film an interview with Fife. Fife’s one requirement is that his wife Emma be present in the room.
