Summary
In Chapter 8, Carmen came to Falk’s motel room and asked him about his father’s map. Falk’s mother had died giving birth to him. Since then, it had just been Falk and his father, who was a man of few words. When he was a teenager, he had been falsely accused of a crime, and his father had moved them to Melbourne. Neither of them had adjusted well, and his father had spent every weekend camping and hiking. Carmen and Falk discussed the case, and then got a call from their superiors, pressuring them to get the documents Alice had promised them. The chapter breaks and the narrator gives Bree’s perspective of Friday afternoon. She had attended a class on navigation, and was in charge of the map, but she was having trouble paying attention.
