Chapter 4-6 Summary
Chapter 4 - Father Service and Parry, now in his thirties, set out to handle a case wherein the local magistrate has charged a wealthy lord with heresy, under the penalty of having all of his wealth stripped and given away to interested parties. But such a thing cannot be done without Church approval. Jolie's ghost accompanies Father Service and Parry, and she is incensed at the case. Reviewing papers, Parry discovers that Lord Bofort stands to gain much from the accused lord's misfortunes, such as land. Parry and Father Service question the seventeen-year-old girl, Fabiola, who has accused the suspected lord of communion with demons. But Parry, at Jolie's insistence, compels the girl to tell the truth. Lord Bofort's men, Fabiola explains, captured her and threatened her. Parry knows that to obtain the girl's safety, he must deliver Lord Bofort to justice. Jolie believes Fabiola...
